The vineyard rises from approximately 575 to 780 feet and spans varied exposures, including an uncommon north-facing parcel. Fractured volcanic soils, coastal airflow, pronounced day-to-night temperature shifts, naturally low yields, and a long ripening season contribute to wines characterized by freshness, energy, lifted aromatics, fine-grained texture, structural clarity, and a mineral line.

The vineyard is farmed organically and is LIVE Certified Sustainable and Salmon-Safe. The primary estate varieties are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Lonesome Rock also has a history with Pinot Meunier and sparkling wine.

Lonesome Rock was founded by Daniel "Danny" Klieman and Susan Klieman after more than twenty-five years spent searching for a vineyard of their own. Their wine story began in France in the early 1990s, where Danny studied oenology at the Université de Bourgogne and worked at Domaine Yves Chaley & Fille in Curtil-Vergy in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. The first Lonesome Rock harvest was 2021, and the inaugural vintage was released in 2023.

Current winemaking responsibilities are wine-specific. Gabrielle Préfontaine is responsible for Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and sparkling wines beginning with the 2024 vintage. Jackson Holstein has made the estate Chardonnay since the inaugural 2021 vintage. Isabelle Dutartre made Lonesome Rock Pinot Noir and sparkling wines for the 2021–2023 vintages.
