Lonesome Rock 2022 The Estate Chardonnay - Willamette Valley

2022 The Estate Chardonnay

Willamette Valley Chardonnay from Our High Elevation Estate

A limited-production, estate-grown Chardonnay drawn from a single, south-facing parcel at Lonesome Rock, planted in volcanic soils at high elevation along the forested edge of the Pacific Coast Range.

Sourced from just 1.28 acres, this cuvée reflects the quiet influence of its setting—cool nights, steady airflow, and the moderating presence of the surrounding woods—shaping a wine of clarity, tension, and measured depth.

After an early-season frost and delayed start to the 2022 season, a more moderate, balanced summer with gradual ripening allowed Chardonnay to develop nuanced flavors and maintain lively acidity, ideal for producing elegant, well-balanced wines with precision.

  • Crisp scents of honey crisp, pear, and lemongrass picking up scents of white flowers and vanilla fleck with a mineral, rain-on-rock vivacity.

  • Three tons of chardonnay were harvested into 1/2 ton bins from our 1.28-acre chardonnay vineyard early morning on September 23rd. A light foot treading is performed before going whole-cluster into the press without settling, then to a mixture of vessels including new puncheon, 'cigare' barrels and new, one-year, and neutral 228's French oak barrels, and one stainless steel. Each vessel undergoes ambient fermentation and ages 10 months during which 75% undergoes malolactic fermentation. Lightly filtered at bottling.

  • Our second vintage began with a long, rainy winter and an April frost scare that threatened much of the Northern Willamette Valley. High elevation and late budbreak spared most of our vines, and the season quickly turned into a roller coaster—from fears of a tiny crop to the largest harvest in Lonesome Rock history.

Summer was mild, with only a handful of days over 90°F. A warm, dry October delivered perfect ripening.

A wild ride ending in beautifully balanced, concentrated fruit—our 2022s are proof that farming really is gambling, and sometimes you win big.
